The village church of St Mary’s is an 11th century Grade 1 listed building.

The site goes back over a thousand years and the village celebrated the church’s millennium in 1996. It has been progressively enlarged over the years and is especially noted for its unique 11th century font, medieval window glass and tiles, some of the best brasses in the area and its one-handed clock.

It is one of the six churches making up the Ridgeway Benefice. The small Yew Tree planted in front of the church was planted for the secular Millennium in 2000.Image

In 2005/6 a major fundraising appeal enabled restoration work to be carried out to the Bell Tower and for the number of bells to be increased to eight. The bells are rung regularly by a local team who can be heard practising most Wednesday evenings. Some interim work was also done to the nave roof and other stonework.

With the assistance of English Heritage, major restoration work is now being done to the Nave roof (last restored 200 years ago) which should complete the work currently needed. An annual Church Fête held at Childrey Manor in June and a Gift Day each September provides regular funds to maintain the fabric of the building.

Services take place at St Mary’s as outlined in ‘Contact’ - the newsletter for the Ridgeway Benefice which is delivered to every household. An all age worship service is held on the first Sunday of each month (alternating with the Methodist Church) and an informal service for pre-school children is held once a month on a Tuesday. "Sunday Club” (for 5-14 years olds) is held at the Methodist Church every Sunday during term times.
